Custom CNC Machining: Milling and Turning for Your Parts

Plan a CNC machining project around the part’s function, material, critical interfaces and finish, then submit a clear multi-part enquiry to DIYIPCB.

Start with the part and its interfaces

A machined housing, mounting block or shaft begins with a functional brief. Describe what the part connects to, what it carries and which dimensions determine whether it works. This gives the manufacturing review a practical basis beyond the shape of the CAD model.

The DIYIPCB CNC machining service accepts multiple designs in one quotation request, with independent requirements for each part. A project can therefore contain different materials, quantities and finish requests without relying on one ambiguous project-wide note.

For an electronics assembly, include board mounting, connector access and mating interfaces. For a mechanical component, provide the equivalent fit and operating requirements. Identify the released revision before discussing manufacturing alternatives.

Request milling, turning or a reviewed combination

The enquiry offers CNC milling, CNC turning, a combination of the two, or an advice option. Use the selection to describe the intended route when known; allow the reviewer to assess the actual geometry and required operations.

Ask how features will be reached and referenced, especially on parts with several working faces. A feature that is easy to model may require additional setups or a design change. Review those implications before fixing a production schedule or assuming one operation covers the complete part.

Manufacturer CNC design guidance identifies tool access, deep features and undercuts as useful review topics. Apply that discussion to your own interfaces rather than copying another supplier’s capability limits into the drawing.

Specify the material grade and finish

Identify the exact material grade when it is required. The service configuration includes metal and engineering-plastic families, with grade and finish requests that are reviewed for the project. An available enquiry option is not a guarantee that every stock size and specification is available.

State why a material or finish matters: a mating contact, visible appearance, corrosion exposure or another application requirement. If an alternative is acceptable, define the approval process rather than leaving a broad substitution instruction.

For coated or treated parts, identify critical fits and any surfaces that need masking or special review. Provide color and appearance references where relevant. Confirm which condition of the part the dimensional requirements apply to.

Give critical features a drawing definition

A solid model communicates geometry, while a drawing records requirements such as threads, tolerances, surface finish and inspection references. Mark the features that determine assembly and performance so they can be reviewed individually.

Distinguish a general tolerance request from a drawing-specific requirement. State thread size and other relevant thread details instead of expecting a cylindrical hole in the model to communicate a complete thread specification.

If surface roughness matters on a particular face, identify that face and the requirement. Avoid selecting one demanding finish for the entire part when only a sealing or locating interface needs it. Final feasibility still depends on the geometry and agreed process.

Use the multi-design request deliberately

Upload a model for each design and attach its reference drawing to the matching part. Give every item a unique name and revision, then set quantity, units, material and finishing independently. Check the summary against your own bill of mechanical parts before submission.

The duplicate-design option can be used to request alternatives, such as another material or quantity for the same geometry. Label the alternatives clearly so they are not mistaken for an instruction to manufacture every version.

STEP/STP and IGES/IGS models are supported in the enquiry, with ZIP packaging for other CAD files. Review the current upload guidance on the service page when assembling the package.

Approve a complete manufacturing scope

Before authorizing work, compare the quotation with the released drawing and model. Confirm the material, quantity, included operations, finish, inspection documents and delivery plan. Resolve proposed changes in a controlled revision or an explicit approval record.

For a first batch, agree which interfaces you will check and how the results will be documented. Keep those records with the accepted configuration. Repeat orders should identify the approved revision and call out any change in material, geometry or surface treatment before production is scheduled.
