PCB Thickness: Check Connector and Enclosure Fit

PCB thickness affects more than the number entered in a quote. It can determine whether an edge connector grips correctly, a screw stack reaches its intended position or a board slides into an enclosure rail. Start with those interfaces before accepting a default thickness.

Build an interface list

Record every feature that depends on the finished board thickness: card-edge connectors, press-fit parts, snap clips, rails, standoffs and connector mounting pegs. Use the exact mating-part drawing. A similar-looking connector from another series may accept a different range.

Keep nominal values separate from allowed limits. If a mechanical design works only at the nominal dimension, it may fail on a board that is still within the accepted manufacturing tolerance. Request the finished thickness and tolerance that apply to your construction, and use that range in the fit review.

Review the complete stack of parts

An enclosure assembly may include the PCB, washers, a thermal interface and a bracket. List these items in order and calculate the allowed stack range from the actual drawings. Do not silently include solder mask or another surface layer twice; ask how finished board thickness is specified and measured when the distinction matters.

For a hypothetical rail-mounted board, check both the largest permitted board thickness against insertion clearance and the smallest against retention. Passing only the insertion check does not show that the board will remain secure. Record the chosen acceptance limits rather than relying on a hand-fit impression.

Connect mechanical changes to electrical review

A thickness change can alter the layer construction used by an impedance-controlled design. Send the revised mechanical requirement to the person responsible for the stackup. The overall thickness and the separation between a signal layer and its reference plane are different parameters; neither should be inferred from the other.

Close the review before quotation approval

  • Attach the relevant connector or enclosure drawing.
  • Mark critical thickness locations and any local features.
  • State the requested nominal thickness and tolerance.
  • Identify dimensions that still need supplier confirmation.
  • Plan a first-article fit check with the actual mating hardware.

Once the construction is accepted, update both the fabrication drawing and order settings. Preserve the result in the mechanical release so a later cost reduction does not accidentally substitute a board that no longer fits the product.
