Flex PCB Bend Requirements: Static vs. Repeated Motion
A flex circuit folded once during installation and a flex circuit that moves throughout its service life present different requirements. Tell the manufacturer how the circuit will be used before asking whether a particular shape can be built. A flat Gerber image cannot show the complete bending condition.
Describe the motion explicitly
State whether the circuit is formed during installation, flexes occasionally for service, or moves repeatedly in operation. For repeated motion, document the travel, expected number of cycles, speed and operating environment. These inputs help define a review; they are not a guarantee that any proposed construction will survive that use.
The All Flex design guide distinguishes bend considerations and construction details for flexible circuits. Its rules belong to its materials and processes. Do not copy a single bend-radius multiplier into a different design without confirming its applicability.
Supply a formed-view drawing
Show the intended bend area, bend direction, smallest required radius and available clearance in the assembled product. Include the positions of connectors, stiffeners and rigid sections. Mark where the circuit is restrained and whether installation can twist it while also bending it.
An example handoff might show a cable path around an enclosure wall and identify the free length between two fixed connectors. That gives the reviewer a meaningful geometry to assess. “Must fit inside the housing” leaves the key loading conditions undefined.
Keep assembly handling in the discussion
Explain how the circuit reaches its final position. A design intended for one gentle installed bend may be folded sharply during assembly if there is no handling plan. Share any temporary forming tools or access constraints with the review team, and keep the approved bend instructions with the assembly documentation.
- Identify the bend region on both flat and formed drawings.
- Record the motion and service-life assumptions.
- Show component and stiffener locations near the bend.
- Define the prototype validation arrangement.
- Specify the electrical checks to perform before and after testing.
Validate the actual construction
Use prototypes with the proposed layer construction and the real mechanical restraints. Test against the intended use and record failures by location and cycle count where relevant. If the layer stack, stiffener edge or enclosure path changes, revisit the review. A successful test of an earlier geometry does not automatically qualify the revised assembly.
