Compare PCB Quotes Without Missing Specification Changes
Two PCB quotes are comparable only when they describe the same deliverable. A lower total may reflect a different material, missing assembly work, a changed quantity basis or excluded shipping. Build a short comparison sheet before deciding which price meets your requirement.
Freeze the technical baseline
Use the same board revision, dimensions, layer count, material, thickness, copper requirements, finish and quantity for each request. Include panelization and special features. If one supplier proposes a different construction, list that as an alternative requiring review rather than silently treating it as equivalent.
For assemblies, also freeze the BOM, variant, placement data, programming and test scope. A bare-board price and a completed PCBA price are different deliverables even if both are described casually as a PCB order.
Normalize the quantity and cost basis
Record whether quantity counts individual boards, panels or finished assemblies. Separate one-time setup or tooling charges from recurring unit charges. Include any minimum purchase quantities or excess components if they are part of the proposal, and ask who retains unused material.
As a simple comparison example, a six-up panel priced per panel cannot be compared directly with a price per individual board. Convert both to the same deliverable count while preserving setup charges. Keep currency and the quote date visible, and request clarification about taxes or import charges instead of assuming they are included.
Compare delivery scope explicitly
- What files or approvals must be complete before the quoted schedule starts?
- Does the timing include assembly, programming and testing?
- Are shipping method and destination the same?
- Which inspection records or certificates are included if required?
- What assumptions still need engineering confirmation?
Evaluate cost reductions as controlled changes
If the price exceeds the budget, ask for separately priced options such as a different quantity or an engineer-approved construction change. Record the design and performance implications before accepting an option. Do not reduce an electrical or mechanical requirement merely because it is a selectable field in a form.
Finish with one accepted specification and one final quotation reference. Ensure the order settings and uploaded files match that baseline. For DIYIPCB boards including FR-4, Flex, Aluminum, Copper Core, Rogers and PTFE Teflon, use the PCB quotation page and attach details for requirements that need review. Preserve the accepted scope for future reorder comparisons.
| Comparison row | Quote A | Quote B |
|---|---|---|
| File and assembly revision | Record identifier | Same baseline? |
| Delivered quantity and unit | Boards/panels/assemblies | Same basis? |
| Construction and special features | List included scope | Same specification? |
| Setup/tooling charges | Separate from unit cost | Separate from unit cost |
| Programming and testing | List included steps | Same scope? |
| Shipping and other charges | State included/excluded | Same destination and terms? |
| Schedule basis | Record start conditions | Same approval assumptions? |
Use the related file and ordering checklist to prepare your handoff, then request a quotation from DIYIPCB. Include special requirements with your files for review.
