Gerber file names and layer mapping

Identify copper, mask, silkscreen, outline, paste and drill files without relying on a single filename convention.

Updated Oct 6, 2026 · 2 min read

File extensions describe conventions, not guarantees

Different CAD tools name the same manufacturing layer differently. Clear descriptive .gbr names and traditional layer extensions can both be useful. The file content and layer mapping must agree; renaming a native PCB project does not turn it into Gerber.

Common layer names

Purpose Common examples Check
Top / bottom copper .GTL / .GBL; F_Cu / B_Cu Tracks, pads and filled zones
Inner copper .G1, .G2; In1_Cu, In2_Cu Actual order through the stackup
Solder mask .GTS / .GBS; F_Mask / B_Mask Openings exposing copper
Silkscreen .GTO / .GBO; F_Silkscreen / B_Silkscreen Text and component legend
Board outline .GKO, .GM; Edge_Cuts Closed profile and cutouts
Paste .GTP / .GBP; F_Paste / B_Paste Stencil apertures, not solder mask
Drilling .DRL or Excellon .TXT Hole sizes, coordinates and plating

These examples are not a mandatory naming rule. A mechanical-layer file may contain notes instead of the outline. Numbered PCB Wizard files need their export report or an explicit mapping.

Add a short layer map when needed

For ambiguous names, include a README listing each filename and its function. For multilayer boards, list copper layers from top to bottom. Identify plated/non-plated holes, slots and any special drill span. Include the design revision and units used in supporting drawings.

Avoid ambiguous archives

  • Do not combine different board revisions or multiple alternative exports.
  • Do not rename files solely to make an automatic preview accept them.
  • Keep the original CAD output names when they already describe the layers clearly.
  • See the software-specific export links in the Gerber package checklist.

Upload to DIYIPCB

Open DIYIPCB PCB / PCBA Online Quote, upload the Gerber ZIP and choose the material, specifications and quantity. Verify the displayed dimensions and layer count against your design; the preview is a reference, not engineering approval.

For bare PCBs, the Gerber ZIP must also contain the drill data. For assembly, provide a matching BOM and placement file as well. Use the available cart or inquiry option for your selected service. See BOM and placement-file requirements.
