Acrylic Cutting File Checklist: Outlines, Engraving and Color

Prepare an acrylic cutting enquiry with a clear outline, separate engraving instructions, known units and a parts list mapping each design to its material and quantity.

Make the final shape unambiguous

Begin with one released outline for each part. Identify the outside boundary, internal cutouts and any features intended only for reference. Include the part number and revision so the file can be matched to the request and quotation.

Use a dimensioned PDF to communicate the intended finished shape alongside any vector or CAD geometry. Mark the overall length and width and enough reference dimensions to verify scale. A screenshot without dimensions should be treated as supporting information rather than the complete manufacturing definition.

The DIYIPCB acrylic file guide is the starting point for the upload package. ZIP CAD files and identify any questions that need resolution before a final quote.

Check scale, duplicate geometry and unnecessary content

Export at the intended scale and state the units. Reopen the exported file to check a known overall dimension. Remove old part versions and unrelated drawing content from the package being released for manufacture.

Inspect the cutting geometry for unintended overlaps, duplicate lines and missing segments. If the file contains several parts, identify them separately and include a parts list. Do not depend on their position on a drawing sheet to communicate quantity.

Explain whether a supplied layout is a reference arrangement or a required deliverable. If material orientation, visible face or a particular layout constraint matters, put it in writing so it can be reviewed rather than inferred.

Give engraving its own instructions

Identify which features are cut through and which are engraved. Use clearly named layers or separate files, together with a PDF showing the intended appearance. Confirm the meaning of any line colors with the reviewer; color conventions are not universal.

For text or a logo, supply the final artwork rather than asking the manufacturing team to recreate it from a small image. Identify its position and viewing direction. If artwork is supplied as vector outlines, keep an editable original in your own archive for future revisions.

For reverse-side work on a clear panel, ask for the orientation to be checked before release. A correctly positioned design can still read incorrectly if its viewing side has not been defined.

Map every part to color, thickness and quantity

A useful parts list has a row for each design and records its filename, revision, quantity, material appearance, thickness and requested process. Include the sample code from the service page where applicable.

For example, a project might contain a clear lid, a frosted display panel and a colored base. Even if the outlines are similar, each needs its own material and quantity definition. Avoid writing one project-wide instruction that conflicts with an individual file.

Ask for alternatives to be quoted separately. If a particular color is unavailable at the required thickness, review the proposed substitution before approval. A material change may affect the intended appearance even when the geometry is unchanged.

Identify assembly and appearance checks

Mark the features that control assembly: mounting-hole spacing, connector openings, mating slots or the outside envelope. If another component controls the fit, provide its relevant interface dimensions and the intended assembly direction.

State the desired edge condition and any polishing request. Identify visible surfaces and protective-film requirements. If a physical appearance sample will be used for acceptance, record which sample and who will approve it.

Do not assume that a nominal sheet thickness defines the final fit of every slot or stack. Explain the mating requirement and ask for it to be reviewed against the proposed material and process.

Submit a concise release note

Part/revision: [reference]. Overall dimensions and units: [details]. Quantity: [number]. Acrylic appearance/sample code: [reference]. Thickness: [value]. Cut geometry: [file]. Engraving artwork and viewing side: [file and notes]. Edge finish: [requirement]. Critical interfaces: [callouts]. Delivery target: [date and destination].

Before authorizing production, compare the quote with that note and the released files. Resolve conflicting instructions in one updated package. For a later batch, keep the approved revision identifiable and label any change in artwork, color or dimensions explicitly.

Discuss your part with DIYIPCB

Send your files, quantity and functional requirements for a reviewed quotation. Material availability, manufacturing feasibility, price and schedule are confirmed for your project before production.
