Identify the exact revision, choose bare boards or assembly, and prepare a controlled package for a DIYIPCB manufacturing quote.

In this guide

Start with a specific project revision

Check permissions and attribution

Choose the build you actually need

Prepare fabrication and assembly data

Plan firmware and first-board validation

Send a useful project brief

Start with a specific project revision

A repository link is a useful starting point, but it does not define a production order. Send the repository URL, exact release tag or commit, board variant and intended quantity. Identify the hardware directory if the repository contains several designs.

Check the project status and documented issues before ordering. A repository described as experimental or work in progress should not be assumed to be a validated product. Ask whether known rework is needed and decide whether to fix the design before manufacture.

Check permissions and attribution

Identify the license covering the hardware files, and separately identify firmware, documentation and third-party assets where applicable. Public access to a repository alone does not establish permission to manufacture, modify or resell its design.

Keep applicable license files and notices with the project package, and confirm that your planned use is permitted. Do not imply upstream endorsement or reuse trademarks as authorization. If permission or obligations are unclear, resolve them with the rights holder before proceeding.

Choose the build you actually need

Bare PCB: unpopulated boards made from the agreed fabrication data.

PCBA: boards with the specified components populated and soldered.

Programmed or tested PCBA: a separately defined build with agreed firmware and acceptance checks.

Complete device: enclosure, external modules, accessories and final-system work only where expressly quoted.

A photograph of a complete upstream project is not the bill of supply. List external displays, batteries, cables, motors and other modules separately so the quotation makes inclusions and exclusions clear.

Prepare fabrication and assembly data

For a bare board, provide Gerber and drill outputs plus the board specification. For PCBA, include a BOM with exact part identification, placement data and assembly notes. If the upstream project supplies only CAD source, request preparation of fabrication data and confirm the outputs before production.

Use one revision across the package. Identify DNP parts, optional component choices, connector orientation and any upstream rework. Keep proposed component replacements subject to your approval where required; a matching footprint alone does not establish electrical or firmware compatibility.

See the assembly file handoff checklist for related checks.

Plan firmware and first-board validation

Provide the firmware release or binary and the documented programming procedure if programming is needed. Describe boot settings, host tools and required accessories. Decide whether an initial assembled board must be evaluated before the rest of the batch is released.

Define the test procedure, expected readings and limits, required fixture and how results should be recorded. Manufacturing an open design does not automatically validate its function, safety, regulatory compliance or performance in your application.

Send a useful project brief

Repository: [URL].
