A useful review follows the current through the board, identifies its narrowest sections and considers the environment in which the circuit will operate. Copper weight is one input to that review.

Start with the operating requirements

Record the expected continuous current, any short-duration peaks, operating ambient temperature and the acceptable voltage drop. Also note whether the product operates in an enclosure or with airflow. Keep assumptions visible so a later reviewer can tell which operating case the layout was designed to support.

Understand what thicker copper changes

For the same conductor material and length, a larger copper cross-section lowers resistance. Both width and thickness contribute to that area. Temperature rise, however, also depends on the surrounding board and how heat leaves it. Texas Instruments’ thermal-design guidance discusses copper thickness, spreading area and PCB construction together rather than treating copper weight as an isolated rating.

Follow the entire path

A broad copper pour can still feed a narrow connection at a pad or via transition. Review the full route from the input connector to the load and back through the return path. Include neck-downs, layer changes, fuse connections and any intentional current-sensing element in the discussion. Mark the areas that need calculation or measurement instead of assuming the largest visible pour determines the result.

Where does the route become narrowest?

Which sections move between layers?

Do connector and component limits agree with the board requirement?

Which current and ambient condition will be used for validation?

Keep calculator assumptions with the result

If you use a trace-width calculator, save the input values and the method it uses. Results obtained with different temperature-rise assumptions are not directly comparable. Treat the calculation as a design input, then validate the assembled prototype under representative conditions. This article deliberately does not assign an ampere rating to “1 oz” or “2 oz” copper without a geometry and operating case.

Translate the design into an order

Specify the required copper weight for the appropriate layers and verify how the fabricator describes finished copper. Ask about the associated track, spacing and process constraints before finalizing a dense layout. If a copper change forces a routing change, issue a new design revision rather than silently modifying the quotation settings.

Discuss a power-layout review through Diseño de placas de circuito impreso, or configure your released board in Presupuesto instantáneo de placas de circuito impreso.

Referencia técnica: Texas Instruments: Thermal Design Guide for DSP and ARM Application Processors, including PCB thermal-design considerations.
